Bonneville Salt Flats, 08/22/2003
This is the announcer's tower...so to speak. There are speakers in the pits and near the staging lanes, and they broadcast on an AM radio frequency.
Keenan Tatro's single-cylinder bike. He ran 124.552 mph.
Here's a very serious Chevy 4-cam motor.
This is Steve Forstall on a 1350cc bike His speed was 242.524. That's scary!
Ron Jolliffe ran this AA/STR to 238.852 mph.
Many of the cars get push starts since they're geared so high. I suppose it also helps to keep the salt from getting torn up.
Many of the teams do their best to keep the sun out of the driver's eyes before they start their run.
This is Ed Stuck who ran 251.936 in this B/FR.
He's gettin pushed off here. The cars have to have self-starters, so they start the motors on the line, then get a push to get rolling.
This is the Piner/Walsh AA/STR getting pushed off.
They were trying to break the record of 238.5 mph but spun right at the lights at the end of the run.
Here's the driver seated in the cockpit of a VERY fast lakester.
Matter of fact, this run turned out to be the fastest of the whole meet.
The team is named "Grumpy Old Men" but the driver seemed anything but old or male. Her name is Tricia Kisner and she appeared to be about 20 years old!
She ran 325.810 mph on this run. Absolutely outstanding!
I parked next to this guy in the pits. He told me that this was the very first motorcycle streamliner ever.
They ran about 125 mph on a 125 cc motor and never got a chance to run with the 250 cc. They're Honda motors, btw.
I saw this streamliner on a trailer in a hotel parking lot in Wendover, Nevada which is about 10 miles from the salt flats. The owner told me that it has
a GMC straight-six motor and ran 291.063 mph. Wow!
Here's a link to the SCTA-BNI web site that has a whole lot more information.
