The new motor [1]

Well, now it's out of the donor and on the stand. I suppose some real work will have to start.

The teardown has begun. This thing's a real mess.

Did I say mess? I'm not sure there are words to describe this.

Look! I discovered the La Brea tar pits in the valley!
I wonder if the previous owner EVER changed the oil.

The top of the motor was so encrusted that I had to chisel one of the intake manifold bolts out.

Let's get started on the bottom end first.

Now to pull the heads off.

The combustion chambers were so full of carbon I thought they were barbeque pits.

Here's another one. Got any lighter fluid?

The cylinders and pistons weren't much better.
Not to mention the water from cleaning and sitting around.

Here's the whole thing on the stand. It doesn't look very good at all.

Well, it's about time to get the block, crank and heads to the machine shop.
Maybe they can work a miracle or two.

The thing that amazed us about this motor was the lack of a ridge on the cylinder bores.
It was like the motor had been rebuilt and the cylinders bored or honed recently...but all that carbon would argue against that theory.

All the parts are in the back of the Elky on the way to the shop.

It turns out that the heads were junk...and so were a set we had lying around. So a set of rebuilt cast iron heads is coming from the shop.
