More detail work
Here's the new vanity plate we got for the Camaro. Since Special Interest plates are limited to 5 characters, we had to combine things a little.
After a trip to Wyoming which included a drive thru the Lincoln County rodeo grounds in a downpour (don't even ask) I decided to do some major cleanup.
You wouldn't believe the smell of the goop that came off when I sprayed it. It smelled just like a rodeo. How bout dat?
While I had the wheels off, I noticed all the overspray in the wheelwells and everywhere else.
So while I had it apart, I painted the wheelwells and the subframe members with gloss black Rustoleum. I didn't get any pictures since
it was dark by the time I got finished. Take my word for it, the difference was striking.
I also noticed all the overspray under the hood...and the hood itself (which you can't see in this pic)...well, it looked pretty bad.
The driver's side wasn't much better. The hinges were all yucky and discolored and there was more overspray on the inner fenders.
So I opened up the gloss black Rustoleum and started painting...very carefully. I finally got the inner fenders, the underside of the hood and the
radiator support all painted black.
And I detailed the header tubes and brake lines with Eastwood's silver header paint. I used that on the tailpipes, too. It sounds a little weird, but it turned out nicely.
The car show judges must have agreed with me, because at the next show, we took 1st place in the Camaro class, beating 8 or 10 other 1st gens.
I was absolutely amazed, because I had given up on ever taking a trophy at the shows. We had decided to go to them just for fun and not worry about trophies...
and lo and behold, up pops a 1st place. Strange.
This is the last update on the RS/SS. I sold it in 2005 to a friend in Iowa. I still miss it.
