The Rebuild begins
(07/08/02) I took the block and crank into the machine shop to get cleaned up a little.
I didn't think that all those metal pieces from the cam and everything else would do it much good.
(07/13/02) After a few days I got everything back from the shop. I had them hot tank it, mangnaflux it, replace the cam bearings and hone
the cylinders to break any glaze that might have developed.
I installed the Clevite 77 main bearing inserts and greased 'em up with some assembly lube.
I got these along with the rod bearings while I was at the machine shop.
Then the crankshaft went in. It had already been turned down .010 on the main and rod journals and the little episode with the cam hadn't hurt it.
So the machinist just polished it up and we're ready to roll.
This is a pic of a pair of valves, springs and rocker studs on the AFR heads. There have been reports of these things breaking, so today I
ordered a set of ARP rocker studs and a set of Comp Cams guideplates. I hope this will avoid any problems that might otherwise have cropped up.
Here are the pistons with the new rings, all cleaned up and ready to install.
This is what happens when you try to hurry the process of installing the pistons. A broken ring. I had to order another set and redo that piston.
I finally got all the pistons in their holes.
And then I flipped the motor over and torqued everything down.
Then I went to work on the heads. I installed the ARP studs and the Comp Cams raised guideplates. Then I torqued the studs down to spec.
