More Modifications



This is the Camaro quick-ratio (XH) steering box that I got from GM Sports Salvage in San Jose CA. The factory box was leaking like a sieve.


Here's the collapsible steering column that was shipped with the steering box.
It has a sticker on it that suggests not turning the column with the airbags armed. Must be a sorta new part.


I ended up replacing the modified V6 fan shroud with one from a 305 powered 79 Malibu.
I sure feel better knowing that there's a warning label under my hood that says "Warning: fan." I'd hate to think that things like this can go unprotected.


The shifter cover from the 74 Chevelle was pretty hammered and didn't fit the Hurst ProMatic 2 very well at all.

So I went to a plastic shop called Commercial Plastics in Salt Lake and talked to a guy named Mike. Turns out he's building a first generation Camaro like Gayle's (which I was driving that day) and he was so willing to help that he handed me a big ol' chunk of ABS plastic to make a new piece out of.


So here it is along with the Dremel tool I'm gonna use to hack away at it.

Since the ABS was 1/4 inch thick, I felt a little like I was bringing a knife to a gunfight, but I started cutting anyway.


Eventually I had a piece of plastic that looked like it was about the right shape.

Then I started the "cut and try" portion of the operation.


Finally I got a slot cut that would fit the grommet from the Hurst kit.

I also drilled and countersunk the mounting screw holes.


Whaddya know? It fits!.

It actually looks better than the one I started with. How about that?
