A little cosmetic surgery.
(08/01/05) Before I get started on the surgery, I'll just mention that I installed a CB radio in the ol Ugly Truck so that I could listen to the official channel at the
Bonneville Speed Week.
(08/05/05) Early last year I started on the "color change" project to deal with the rust and really ugly lookin parts of the truck before I went to the Rat Fink Reunion and then the Salt Flats.
When I got to the bed, I ran a DA sander over it pretty quickly and hit it with a coat of Zero-Rust. That stuff is a good primer, but it's not meant to be a top coat.
So the end result wasn't very good, especially after sittin out in the rain and snow thru the winter. So this summer I kept looking at the surface rust underneath the fading primer and one
day I got out the DA sander and started to do a little work on it. I thought I'd just sand down some of the worst spots and shoot 'em with primer again.
Well, a little led to a little more and...
...I ended up taking the whole side down to bare metal...or rust, whichever I could get to.
Then the Bondo can came out and I started in on some of the dents. There were a lot to choose from.
Sixty-two layers of Bondo (just kidding) later and some spot putty and it was fairly straight. I wasn't aiming for a 100 percent perfect job.
Then I gave it the old "Zero-Rust" treatment again.
That work on the left side made the right side look pretty bad. So I taped things up, sanded the primer smooth...
...and gave it a coat of semi-gloss black Rustoleum.
When I took the tape off, it looked a lot better.
I gave the left side the same Rustoleum treatment and evened things out. That's the way it looked for the Bonneville Speed Week meet.
More to come.
