Rufus: Rear end swap.
(11/30/2006) The rear brakes look almost as good as the fronts, but had more wear on the service brake shoes. I'll have to replace them.
I had one hell of a time getting the right brake drum/hub off. I broke one gear puller and bent another one.
I finally ended up loading the whole axke into the Ugly Truck and taking it to a guy who specializes in restorations. He showed me the special tool and the trick to
getting them removed. You screw this tool onto the threads on the axle, then beat the hell out of it with a brass hammer. I spose I'm still in the steep portion of the
learning curve. But I'm learning.
I got most of the crud scraped off and I'm waiting for the weather to warm up a bit before prepping and painting it.
(03/11/07) Fast forward to March 07. I crawled out of hibernation and started to work on the A project...slowly...very slowly.
I finally got the parking brake assembly off.
Now it's down to the backing plate.
(06/11/07) After another 3 month break from the brakes (some health issues and some travel seemed to eat into my available time and motivation.)
But I got the new brake shoes into place.
Then I had to take things apart again so that I could refurbish the adjuster (that round thingie at left center) because I couldn't back the shoes off enough to
get the drum back on.
The parking brake backing plate is back on.
And so is the parking brake band. There are two different braking surfaces inside the rear drum. One for the "service" brakes and one for the parking brake.
My lessons in Model A Fords continue.
I did the same thing on the other side. It went a lot quicker than the first side since I had some sort of idea what to do.
The rear end swap isn't complete, so I'll be continue making additions to this page, but I've made another page for some of the other things that I've been doing.
Next page: Door latch and other stuff.
