Rufus: More CABinetry
(06/06/06...Hmmm...666) I hadn't been able to do much of anything on the Rufus project since last winter. The health issues got in the way, I couldn't heat the garage while
on the oxygen tube and I couldn't work in the propane fumes, anyway. So I worked on model cars over the winter.
Then when spring finally sprung, there were so many other things to do that I didn't get much more than a couple of things addressed on the Model A. But I've gotten back
to it and slow progress is being made with help from friends and family, since I can't do a whole lot of physical stuff.
This is about the way it ended up last December. The wood had been varnished and some of the pieces had been test fit, but that was about it.
The first thing we did was to get the seat back braces all fitted and loosely bolted into place.
Then we cut a piece of wood that was 28.5 inches long, which is what "the book" says the door opening whould measure When we were sure that we could bolt it together
and get this measurement right, we started gettin serious.
We used latex caulking to provide a seal for the front header piece. I don't know if this is the right stuff, but the book just says to use waterproof sealant. It'll probably work fine.
Then we clamped it in place and fastened it with wood screws.
We just kept following the instructions in the book, trimming, adjusting and fitting until the parts were all in place.
Finally we went around and tightened everything up. I sure hope we don't have to take it apart again.
(06/22/06) One of the last things to do was to nail the sheet metal to the wooden frame pieces.
There will be a little more to do with the wooden parts and pieces, but the
majority of this part of the project is behind us.
Next: Motor work.
